Second Chance

Second Chance is the charity shop of Archway Methodist Church, established in 1995. It is located in one of the shop units on the ground floor of the Archway building.

The shop gives an ideal opportunity to reach out into the local neighbourhood and provides a service of making available affordable second hand clothes and goods to some of the poorest members of the local community.

Last year a record £32,000 was given away to charitable causes, including national and local charities and church projects overseas

We rely on a team of volunteers to maintain the work of the shop and always welcome new offers of help.

Prison Chaplaincy

The circuit has been committed to prison chaplaincy work for quite a number of years, with ministers visiting both HMP Pentonville and Holloway. The present minister works 10 hours per week in each establishment as a member of the multifaith chaplaincy team.

Pentonville is a Victorian establishment, housing up to 1200 inmates. This figure is high as most of the cells are 'doubles', and the prison certainly looks and feels overcrowded. Holloway houses around 500 female inmates and includes a young offenders unit.

The free church chaplain contributes to the statutory duties of seeing inmates within 24 hours of arriving at the prison and making daily visits to the health care unit and segregation unit. There is also the opportunity of taking a Sunday service in each prison every month.

Fairtrade

We support the principles of Fairtrade and encourage the use of fairly traded products where possible.

We are working towards becoming a Fairtrade Circuit by meeting the requirements set out by the Fairtrade Foundation:

  • Use Fairtrade tea and coffee for all meetings for which we have responsibility.
  • Move forward on using other Fairtrade products (such as sugar, biscuits and fruit)
  • Promote Fairtrade during Fairtrade Fortnight - and through other activities whenever possible.
